🌟 Maker’s Spotlight: Meet Karen from Karen’s Knits

Meet Karen, the crafter behind Karen's Knits

At The Crafters Barn, we’re all about celebrating the people behind the handmade magic—and we’re delighted to introduce you to Karen, the warm-hearted maker behind Karen’s Knits. From poppies to premature baby clothes, Karen’s creations come from a place of passion, history, and heartfelt purpose.

A Yarn-Filled Journey

“My name is Karen, I’m 59, recently widowed, and affectionately known as Bionic Nanna Karen—I’ve got two new knees!” Karen says with a laugh. She’s a proud mum, a loving grandmother, and someone who has been knitting since she was just five years old. “My mother taught me. I’ve now been knitting for over 55 years.”

Knitting for Karen isn’t just a hobby—it’s a source of joy and connection. “It gives me a lot of pleasure to give my items to people or to charity. I love the happiness and appreciation my items bring.”

Making with Heart

Karen’s process is delightfully instinctive. “I just pick up a ball of yarn and I know what I’m going to knit. Red yarn? Poppies or Christmas bits. Green yarn? Leaves!” She mainly uses double-knit yarn, straight needles, and a trusty sewing needle—no fancy kit, just years of skill and love poured in.

Her favourite pieces? “I love making premature baby clothes and sending them to the local hospital. My son was born six weeks early, so it’s my way of giving back.”

Despite living with arthritis, she takes her time—“about a week per piece”—working from a comfy chair, with the TV on in the background.

The Crafters Barn & Beyond

Fed up with eBay’s fees, Karen found her home on The Crafters Barn. “It’s commission-free, and that just felt right. I thought I’d give it a go—and I’m glad I did!”

Her advice to new makers? “Go for it. Enjoy the experience. Take your time.”

Karen’s proudest moments are the heartfelt messages she receives from customers. “That just makes it all worth it.”

Looking Forward

Karen’s shop is about more than just products—it’s about spreading happiness, something she hopes to continue doing in the year ahead. What’s next? “I’m trying my hand at knitted soft toys—fruits and vegetables too!”

When she’s not knitting, you’ll find Karen in the garden, going for a walk, or relaxing with a good book or TV show.

From her first stitch to her latest wreath, every creation Karen makes comes wrapped in kindness. We’re thrilled to have her as part of the Barn family. 🧶💜
